How Do You Make a Blog That Generates Leads

How Do You Make a Blog

In this digital age it has become essential that anyone in business should have their own self hosted blog.

Before I address the question of How Do You Make a Blog, I want to go over the reasons why it is so important to have one, regardless of the type of business that you are in.

I often hear people say that they do not need a Blog because they have a Facebook Fan page for their business or a Youtube Channel and every other Social Media platform out there.

These are all great and should definitely be part of your overall marketing mix.

BUT and it is a very BIG But! You Do Not Own These!

That’s right, you may very well have created your business fan page or YouTube channel but these can be shut down at any time without warning! Yes this does happen!

The ideal way to set up your online presence is to create your own Self Hosted Blog and use this as your Central Hub and then use all your Social Media channels to drive traffic to your blog.

(Imagine your Social Media sites as spokes in a wheel with your blog as the hub)

How Do You Make a Blog – Step 1

The First thing you need to do is secure a Domain Name for your Blog. There are many different places where you can do this online. The two places I get mine from are Godady.com and NameCheap.com

(Hint – always Google for discount coupons before you purchase!)

You should give a lot of thought to the name of your blog. If you have a brick and mortar type business then it would make sense to secure the same domain for your business blog.

If however you are in the Home Business Industry, like me, then I strongly recommend setting your blog up in your own name like me for example, which is www.CliveJeffrey.Com.

The reason I do this, is that I may change the opportunities I am working with at some stage in the future and if I had started my blog up based around the opportunity, I would have to start again from scratch.

However, because I have personally branded myself, I am able to just inform my followers of my new opportunity.

Remember, People Join People Not Opportunities.

How Do You Make a Blog – Step 2

Once you have purchase your domain, your next step is to set up your hosting. Two companies that I recommend are Hostgator or BlueHost. Both are very reputable companies and would the job you are after.

How Do You Make a Blog – Step 3

Now that you have you domain secured and set up your hosting, the next step is to decide on an actual blogging platform.

I would strongly recommend using WordPress if you are in this for the long haul. I would even go so far as to suggest, that if you are not in this for the long haul, then don’t bother going any further as blogging is a long term strategy to grow your business.

That being said, I don’t believe there is a better way than blogging to set yourself up as an authority in your chosen niche, so you may as well take the time to do it right from the outset.

There are many free WordPress themes that you can use to create your blog, just Google it and find something that appeals to your needs.

I personally use a paid WordPress theme called Optimize press 2.0 which is specifically design for online marketers and is nice and streamlined and easy to use.

How Do You Make a Blog – Step 4

Once you have decided on your theme and you have installed it, the next step is to create and install your blog graphics.

If you would like to make your own, I recommend using Canva.com which is a free, very easy to use design platform. Alternatively you can get a blog header produced on Fiverr.com for as little as $5.

How Do You Make a Blog – Step 5

The next step you need to take, is to install the Plugins that you want to use on your blog. If you go to my blog on the link above you will find a list of the plugins that I recommend that you use for your blog.

These plugins will do things like back up your blog, add comments and social media share buttons to name a few!

To install these plugins, its recommended to use the internal search feature inside WordPress as demonstrated in the training. This is the easiest way to install these plugins.

Akismet – For Spam Protection

BackUpWordPress – For Backing up your WordPress site. Please make sure you do this as without the protection, your site could go down and you could lose all your hard work!

WordPress By Yoast – Yoast is an all in one SEO Soloution for your WordPress Blog: SEO Titles, meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, breadcrumbs. Here is a great article that will help you configure this plugin Click Here

Google Analytics For WordPress –  Allows you to connect your blog with Google Analytics.

Wp-smush.it – This plugin optimizes images so they load faster

How to Make a Blog – Step 6

Congratulations! Your blog is starting to take shape! Your next step is start creating valuable content to publish on your blog that is going to inform, educate and entertain your target market.
